The
image of the filament is first directed upon a plain surface about 1 metre distant;
it is then brought sharpely into focus at this distance by means of the focusing
ring(sleeve), if a plain mirror effect is required, the sleeve is moved downwards
(towards the handle) until the streak is roughly one cm.wide. If a concave mirror
effect is preffered , the sleeve is moved upwards. Once this setting has been
made, the focusing sleeve need not moved during the rest of the refraction.
The
instrument, with the streak correctly adjusted, is held comfortably in the hand
and the patient's eye is visulised in the ordinary way through the observing hole.
